Yesterday I went to an opera performed at a local school. This was an entertaining performance from the singers on stage in their outfits and the song selections were in Italian, as operas tend to be, which included two of the scores composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and what great performances they were. It was really impressive on how one of the female singers was able to maintain a conversation while singing and reaching with those falsettos and the really high lingering "ahhhh" portions of the music with a vibrato. As a musician, I appreciated the performance from the pianist and her timing with the singers on stage. Each note was rather comedic and combined elegance as the cast did their best to tell a story whilst speaking and singing in Italian. Truly, a culturally impressive performance and I would have thought the singers were Italian if not for the fact that some were Irish-American, African-American, and one of them was a Filipina-American. The Filipina singer wa...

Going to Little Italy in Baltimore is always a treat, especially for those who enjoy the cultural events that happen. With my friends, we went to a little restaurant for a sort of Bingo night and trivia about Italian culture. I loved the little dessert catering that the host had brought over and though it was annoying trying to find decent parking, I was able to enjoy the rest of the evening. One of my friends almost won Bingo but this elderly gentleman had won. It seemed that he and his wife were working together to win the game, which they did. I did not get to see much of the trivia since the group wanted to find the next event to go to and it wasn't at all bad to end on. For the trivia parts I was able to hear, these were all in Italian anyway so that was not much I could do but see the room to see if everyone was able to understand or speak Italian. This was a fun night and I would love to attend another one of these cultural events again. I can appreciate how there is such ...

Essay 2 draft of Digital Storytelling

Evolution of Music Samuel Kim 300 Words In this story I would like to share the origin of music and how it has impacted humanity ever since. From the primitive days of mankind, music has become the keystone of every culture in existence. Dating as far as 43,000 years ago, archaeologists have found that there were instruments like flutes made from bone and ivory. If flutes were made back then, then before instruments were songs from the voices of primitive men and women, who knows what the songs these people of the past have sang. There have been many civilizations that started and ended but music can be recovered. From the Ancient Chinese dynasties to countries like Egypt, India, and Mesopotamia, music had still been prevalent, inspiring other countries and civilizations to have music. Religion plays a good part in music, with Buddhism having chants that are still sung to this day as well as Hebrew songs and Gregorian chants. Christianity grew as a religion, Europe was forever ch...

The topic for my proposed idea for the syllabus would be exploring the impact of minority music in American history as well as the various artists and musicians that helped shape up or be the face of entire genres. I had come up with this idea after researching The Golden Record from the famous Voyager 1 spacecraft . I thought it would be a great topic to write about since NASA had collaborated with Carl Sagan to create the record along with Dr. Sagan's wife. I really love the fact that an EP vinyl had been launched into space as a message for extraterrestrial kind. As a massive space enthusiast and all things out of this world, I had always pondered upon the possibilities of life on other planets. I genuinely appreciate how the record contains various cultures around the world to add in order to explain to the hypothetical life forms who we humans are, how many we are, what we do, what we are made of, what other life forms exist, the sounds and looks of Earth and its inhabitants...

During one of my visits to some of the festivals this year, I had gone to one that spoke to me: the Asian Festival. However, even though I did feel that this festival in my soul, it was not because of the fun, but because of the horrible experience I recall seeing the various booths and oceans of people waiting in lines. Whoever coordinated this event should have been sued, honestly, since it did no one a favor waiting in one line for some overpriced desserts, dishes, and pathetic attitude and mockery the cashiers and cooks had treated the people who waited hours in line for. The Howard County fairgrounds was meant to handle a lot of people but seeing as how the event was organized, clearly this was a disorganized event in general. I personally waited one whole hour just to get to a tent that was not even the right one because the line roped to a different one in an S pattern. For one line, it took 2 hours average, seeing as how when I made it to the cashier, the friends that were spre...

Essay 1: Music Culture in America

When in the course of human events, as societies change and grow as American citizens, the changes in music have risen as a result. Upon asking a stranger, no matter where in the world, usually they would describe American music as Rock and Roll, Jazz, Metal, Rap, and Pop music. Why is that the case? Some would say it is because of notable musicians and artists like Tupac, Louis Armstrong, Justin Bieber, Beyoncé, and Weird Al just to name a few. It is true that these people have revolutionized, popularized the genre of their music, but the true roots stem back to the blues from African-Americans that were predominantly slaves during the 1800s. Historically, blues originated first from the workers on the plantations in the south, picking up hymns and expressing their struggles and pain as a slave working without fairness and proper treatment from their masters. With this and the spiritual songs, chants, and rhythmic storytelling being blended with the African-American suffering, the gen...

I recently went to an event in Baltimore for a South-Asian festival that had food and festivities. It was a rather tasty experience, trying at least 6 dishes that had chicken and fish but I could not remember the names. I was too full to provide many pictures but the event was exciting and piqued my senses in smell, taste, touch, and even sound when I heard the people rushing to try things. I could have tried to document more for this event but I was so overwhelmed and this was just a lot to absorb!    Some of the foods looked like this, with a variety of rice dishes, protein, and sauces that were quite a sensational experience.
